Birthing Center NYC FAQs

Our birthing center is an Article 28 NYS licensed healthcare facility dedicated to providing a safe environment for natural childbirth. Our center is staffed by midwives, medical doctors, and nurses. Our midwives provide prenatal care and attend labor and births. We offer postpartum care, gynecology, newborn care, and pediatrics. Our focus is on protecting birth as a mother-led experience. We are a birth setting that aims to reduce the use of unnecessary medical intervention. We provide care in a way that safeguards birth as the natural process it was designed to be.

Yes, giving birth in a birthing center is safe. Birthing centers are an ideal birth setting for low-risk pregnancies. Birth centers are equipped with essential medical supplies and staffed by experienced midwives who are trained to handle normal deliveries and identify a potential complication early on. Birth centers have excellent neonatal outcomes and reduce the cesarean rates. Our birth center also has protocols in place to transfer to a hospital if necessary. We are affiliated with a hospital so that a transfer can be as seamless as possible.

The cost of the birth center can vary depending on services provided. The fees typically include prenatal visits, the birth itself, and postpartum care. Additional costs may arise for specific services.

Many insurance plans cover birth center services, though coverage can vary. We help you verify with your insurance company whether they include birthing center care in their coverage. We also offer financial assistance or payment plans.

Yes. Our birthing center happily accepts Medicaid.

Mothers may choose a birthing center for a more personalized, natural birth experience. Birth Our birth center offers a homelike environment, and our clients have autonomy in their birthing process. We also have lower intervention rates, such as lower rates of intervention and surgery compared to hospitals. They also provide a supportive, family-centered approach to childbirth.

No, epidurals are not approved for use at a birthing center. The risks associated with epidural use necessitate being in a hospital. Birth centers offer low intervention, natural pain management techniques, such as hydrotherapy- waterbirth. (There is a birthing tub in each birthing suite). If a client ends up desiring an epidural, the attending midwife will arrange a transfer to a hospital so that the client can get what she desires.

A birth center differs from a hospital in its focus on low-intervention, natural childbirth in a homelike setting. Birth centers provide a more relaxed and personalized environment. Birth centers do not routinely use medical intervention during the birth process- intervention is reserved for the minority who truly benefit from it.

Hospitals are equipped to handle high-risk pregnancies and significant medical complications. Our expertise and skills are specialized for low risk pregnancy. Our birth center births are attended by midwives and follow the midwifery model of care. Hospitals often have obstetricians and follow the medical model of care.

The midwifery model of care centers control to the laboring woman, equalizes the relationship between midwife -client, and views childbirth as a normal life cycle event.

Our birth center supports the mother to choose who she wants to be surrounded by at this precious life event. This includes partners, family members, close friends, and a doula. It’s a very personal choice who a woman wants around her during her birth.

Ideally, a birth center should be not too far from your home. Proximity ensures timely access to care and can make the travel to and from the center easier during labor. Of course, also consider traffic patterns!

The length of stay at a birthing center is usually between 6 to 12 hours after birth, depending on the mother’s and baby’s health. The goal is to ensure both are stable and well before discharge. Postpartum follow-up care is then provided through home visits, as early as 1-2 days postpartum or scheduled appointments at the center.

When looking for a birthing center, consider factors such as location, services offered, of course, check out our reviews from other like- minded . Visit the center to check its cleanliness, comfort, and atmosphere. Ensure they are accredited and have established protocols for emergency situations and hospital transfers. We are an accredited, licensed birth center with 24/7 on call providers!
